Masterwork recital - Chopin/Grieg/Mörk Karlsen recital

Piano virtuoso Svein Amund Skara will perform Frédéric Chopin's complete Ballades (1--4) and Scherzos (1--4). Playing all four ballades and all four scherzos in a single evening is a monumental physical and mental achievement. It is extremely rare for an audience to experience these eight works performed together. The Ballades: Chopin's innovative form of piano music. These are deep, emotional, wordless narratives inspired by medieval ballades that could encompass an entire life story. They demand maturity, tone control, and immense virtuosity---such as in the shattering conclusion of the fourth ballade. The ballades are a masterful collection of compositions that span the entire emotional spectrum, from ecstasy to deep despair. The challenge for pianists is to do full justice to these pinnacles of piano literature. The Scherzos: Chopin's scherzos are explosive, demonic, and filled with violent contrasts. Technically, they offer breakneck passages and lightning-fast chord leaps. The concert opens with music from one of Edvard Grieg's international successes, Lyric Pieces. Volume 7 will be performed at this concert. The second act of the concert opens with Piano Sonata in B minor, a very interesting composition by probably the most recorded contemporary composer in Norway, Kjell Mörk Karlsen.
